Accessible Content on Twitter

Hello dear reader! Thanks for being here in one more entry. Ely García greets you with affection. First of all, I want to thank you for being here, this will be our last entry of the year, but don't worry that faster than we think we will be back sharing this space of technologies that we like so much.

Continuing with the series of posts focused on web accessibility and social networks, today we will talk about how to be more accessible and more inclusive when communicating on social networks. We will go step by step since this is a beautiful but giant world. We will start with Twitter and later with the rest of the networks.

In our last post, we said that a social network can be 100% accessible on its platform, but maintaining content accessibility depends on the users. The Twitter Help Center provides us with instructions for adding descriptions to any image we post. Additionally, the Help Center provides instructions for using Twitter with assistive technology such as VoiceOver for Mac or iOS, TalkBack for Android, JAWS, and NVDA for Windows.

In this post, we will focus only on mobile devices so as not to make this blog a book.

Descriptions for images on Android

Android users should go to the menu or profile icon at the top of the screen. Click on "Settings and Privacy" and then click on "Accessibility" in the general menu. To activate the function, select the "Compose Image Descriptions" box. The next time you attach an image to a Tweet, click "Add Description", enter the desired text and click "Apply".

Descriptions for images on iOS

  • Go to the User Menu located at the top of the screen.
  • We go to "Settings and Privacy".
  • We double-click on "Accessibility".
  • Activate the switch "Write Image Descriptions".
  • We go to "Image Gallery" and select an image.
  • We return to the tweet composition screen, locate the image and slide it up or down until we hear the alert “Add Description to Photo” .7
  • We enter the text and double click on "Apply".
